Double Honors – Gordon Osinski wins the Florence Bucke Award and the Mineralogical Association of Canada’s Young Scientist Award

Gordon Osinski, Associate Professor, cross-appointed to the Departments of Earth Sciences and Physics & Astronomy, is the 2015 recipient of the Faculty of Science Florence Bucke Award as well as the Mineralogical Association of Canada’s Young Scientist Award 2015, both recognizing several major contributions to the geological and international planetary science communities.
A “rising star” in the field of meteorite impact craters and their effects on the origin and evolution of Earth, Dr. Osinski’s research has been instrumental in the growing recognition that impact events, while causing destruction, may also shape the ecological landscape affecting the evolution of life on Earth and other planetary bodies as well as produce economic benefits.
A highly productive and prolific researcher, Dr. Osinski has already published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in international journals. In 2008, he became one of the youngest scientists to ever be invited to assume the role of Associate Editor for the journal Meteoritics and Planetary Science and more recently authored the first comprehensive book on the topic of impact cratering published in the last twenty years.
Recognized early on as a leader and community-builder, Professor Osinski was a driving force behind the creation of the Centre for Planetary Science and Exploration, an organisation focused on multidisciplinary research and training for which he was recently appointed Acting Director. He led the formation of the Canadian Lunar Research Network and secured an opportunity for Canada to become the first International Affiliate Member of the NASA Lunar Institute. Within the geological community, Dr. Osinski also spearheaded the creation of the Planetary Sciences Division of the Geological Association of Canada.
